Here's a recap
of
our First Ever Meeting
held
at
Magee-Womens Hospital
UPMC on June 7th!
A well
represented meeting was held on June 7th at Magee
Womens Hospital for the newly formed 3Rivers Point of Care
Network. Materials for the meeting ,catered breakfast, lunch
and free parking were generously provided by contributions
from Alere,
Telcor, Hemocue, Abbott and Magee’s Department of Pathology.
Introduction
The meeting opened with a welcome and introduction to the
facility from Pathology Business Director Ed Smith.
Introduction of POCT Coordinator Lorraine Noel and
invitation to all attendees to introduce followed.
Vendor Fair
The limited vendor fair with representation from Telcor,
Hemocue, Abbott i-STAT, Radiometer, and Osom Rapid test kits
was attended by all who came at breaks throughout the day.
CLIA PPMP
Updates and Options with Rapid Test Kits
Our first presentation was from Jill Sutter of Siekesui
Diagnostics on the changes in the PPMP regulations was
given. Types of CLIA certificates, regulating bodies and the
growth of POCT oversight were outlined. Discussion of
documentation increases in proving proficiency for tests was
in depth.
Roundtables
A lively discussion was held on topics of interest to the
group. Some are listed below

Addressing POCT Needs; The
Good, The Bad, and The Risky
Our second presenter was Marcy Anderson from CLSI who
provided information on the processes by which regulations
and guidelines are established. Information was given on
resource obtainment for subjects of interest. Discussion led
to the new EP23 document on risk management and its
influence on the recommendations for Quality Control
performance.

What's Next?
Surveys forms were distributed for topics of interest. A
call to order for the election of officers was held for the
first year.
