Heparin use in coagulation therapy has been widely documented.  This session will discuss current uses of Heparin and methods of monitoring and troubleshooting at the Point of Care.

  1. Describe what Heparin is, how it works,
    and why it is used

  2. Discuss Heparin Dosing/Reversal

  3. Discuss uses of Heparin and monitoring and troubleshooting methods

Platelet Function at the Point of Care

Hemostasis is the process by which the body spontaneously stops bleeding and maintains blood in the fluid state within the vascular compartment.  One way the body is able to maintain hemostasis is through the use of platelets. This session will discuss the platelet basics and the systems to monitor platelet functionality.

 

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

At the end of the session, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe platelets anatomically and functionally

  2. Describe situations which affect platelet function

  3. Discuss how platelet function is monitored

  4. Understand the correlation between platelet anatomy and in-vivo hemostasis

Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism collectively identify a classification of disease known as Venous Thromboembolic Disease (VTE).  This session will discuss the role of D-dimer in the treatment process of VTE.

                       

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

At the end of the session, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the incidence of Venous Thromboembolic Disease (VTE)

  2. Verbalize the pathophysiology of VTE and the role D-dimer plays in detecting the fibrinolysis process

  3. Understand the 2 chief clinical manifestations of this disease process

  4. Acknowledge awareness of the strengths and weakness of the various laboratory methods for D-dimer testing

Speakers

James Campbell, MPHA, MT(ASCP) is the Divisional Manager of Helena Point of Care’s Hemostasis.  Prior to his current position James was the Product Manager of Helena Plateletworks’ point of care.  He is also affiliated with the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis.

Richard Heitsman is Manager CQI-Health Systems-Dade Behring.  Prior to his current position, Richard was a Cardiac Care Specialist with Dade Behring.  He is also affiliated with National Society of Cardiovascular Administrators and the American Heart Association Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.
