The spring meeting of
the NC Point Of Care Coordinators Network was held at Northeast
Medical Center in Concord May 6, 2005 and featured the topic
“Leadership Communications”. Debra Norkett, the Point of Care
Coordinator at Northeast, hosted the meeting. This meeting had a good
turnout of about 50 people, who were anxious to learn tips for
effective communication with nursing staff that perform point of care
testing! Many of our wonderful vendors also attended the meeting and
participated in a vendor fair, allowing the group members the
opportunity to see new products and instrumentation. Nancy Smith conducted a short business meeting prior to our speaker presentation. NC Point of Care Network Group officer elections for 2006 was discussed. Nominations for these positions were accepted from members. Elections will be conducted at the fall meeting. Also discussed was our network database that outlines the point of care tests that each hospital performs. This database is being created as an aid for all members so they have a “go to” person to consult with about test methods and specific brands of tests used. Database forms were distributed to all members to complete and submit. We hope to have this database completed by the fall meeting and distribute it to all members. A volunteer host site for the fall meeting was requested. The location and topic for this upcoming meeting will be posted on this site as soon as it is available. Kim Ballister and Sheila Cruthis gave a brief Treasurers Report, informing us of the status of our finances. 2005 member dues were collected from members. |

Prior to our speaker
presentation, the members of the group participated in an “Icebreaker”
activity. This Icebreaker was intended to give us the opportunity to
get to know each other better and to encourage networking among
members of the group. We played “Point of Care Network Bingo” and
everyone seemed to have a good time.
Our speaker, Rick Import, sponsored by Medical Automation Systems, presented “Leadership Communication For The POCC: Essential Skills For Dealing Successfully With Anyone”. This interactive discussion included role-play situations and provided attending members with tips and techniques to improve their communications with supervisors and operators. Throughout the day, Sherry Gant, Point of Care Coordinator for Gaston Memorial Hospital, raffled off numerous items donated by our many wonderful sponsors. At the end of the day, speakers and sponsors were recognized. |
