On Friday, May 11,
2007, over 57
participants enjoyed the beautiful new AnMed campus and a day filled
with great speakers, highlighted by a vendor fair and great food and
prizes. Patti Pitts and the staff at AnMed are to be commended for a
very successful, well-planned meeting.

Pitts and the staff at Anmed Health in Anderson, SC hosted

Speakers
The speakers were
all exceptional and provided interesting new insights on old and new POC
topics.
Ryan Munn, Abbott/GE,
discussed Cardiac Markers and their impact on POC testing. His
slides and discussion gave the group a new perspective on Emergency
Rooms and how POC testing could play a role.

"Navigating the Regulatory Maze" |
Susan Ramsey, Roche Diagnostics,
reviewed changes in Regulatory standards and opened up the floor for
discussion. She was able to help us all think of how we might be
able to drop some of the studies currently being performed in light
of the new regs.
Tonya Kiziah, Accumetrics,
reviewed and discussed antiplatelet therapy and monitoring and how
this testing could fit into POC. Her material gave insight into
Plavix and aspirin use and how testing for the clearing or
effectiveness of these drugs could be important in certain patient
cases.

Numerous vendors participated in a vendor fair
presenting new information technology. |
Sonya Evans, Greenville Hospital
System, and Patti Pitts, AnMed Health Systems, moderated a
session on Competency. Current standards for CLIA, JCAHO and CAP
were reviewed with regard to competency. Then several example forms
were discussed in an open forum so that those present might get
ideas of how others meet these difficult standards. (These forms
were also provided in electronic format on CD in each packet.)
Vendors and Sponsors
The food was
abundant and delectable! Breakfast was provided by Instrumentation
Laboratories. Lunch was provided by Abbott/GE. The afternoon break was
provided by Lifescan/J&J.
Numerous vendors
participated in a vendor fair that allowed POC Coordinators and others
present to network and gain new information about upcoming technology.
Many vendors also contributed door prizes that were given out by random
drawing of those present.
Business Meeting
-
The two
topics of discussion were planning of the next SC POC meeting and
billing for POC testing in South Carolina.
-
It was
determined (by volunteers) that the Fall 2007 meeting will be held at
the new Patewood Memorial Hospital (part of the Greenville Hospital
System) in Greenville, at MUSC in Charleston in the Spring of 2008 and
at Spartanburg Regional in Spartanburg in the Fall of 2008.
-
All were
encouraged to recruit hospitals not currently represented in the SC POC
Network, and to send their information to Sonya Evans at
sevans@ghs.org in order to get them on the mailing list.
-
Regarding billing, there was much discussion and voiced frustration at
the current situation of SC not allowing billing, especially for Glucose
meter testing.
-
Several
POCCs have discussed this with their Finance department, but feel that
these folks are reluctant to put pressure on the state agencies since
this could cause negative repercussions for their facility overall.
-
The
group decided that the best course of action is to encourage all POCCs
to discuss this information again with their Finance and Corporate
Compliance departments, and to urge all vendors to put pressure on CMS
and other such agencies in hopes of sparking some change and equity
among states
