The
second meeting of the South Carolina POC Network was held
September 17, 2004 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.
Even though Hurricane Ivan attempted to detain some
people, approximately 100 POC participants still attended the
meeting. A vendor
fair was also held, with 10 different vendors represented. |

|
|
The meeting was opened
with a welcome from Renee Romberger, VP of Professional Services
at Spartanburg Regional. She commended all of the dedicated laboratory and nursing
professionals who carved time out of their busy schedules to
attend such a meeting, citing dedication and the drive for
knowledge as obvious factors. She also commended the planning
committee and recognized their hard work in bringing this group
together. |
The
Planning Group consisted of:
- Chris Floyd, POCC at Spartanburg
Regional
- Melvin Rowland, Manager of POC testing, Spartanburg
Regional
- Sonya Evans, POCC at Greenville Memorial
Hospital
-
Andrea Purser, Senior Account Manager for Roche Diagnostics
Diabetes Care Division

“Joint
Commission Accreditation Update” |
Renee then introduced
the first speaker for the day, Ms. Marilyn Sims, Consultant with
the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO) sponsored
by JCAHO. Ms. Sims
presented a dynamic presentation entitled “Joint Commission
Accreditation Update” that addressed JCAHO’s new process for
inspections, examples of “tracers” used during POC
inspections, some common compliance issues, changes to standards
for 2005, a review of the National Patient Safety Goals and an
introduction to the new JCAHO Laboratory Services and products. |
 |
The presentation followed with an informative
question/answer session. Resources
were provided for those having other issues or questions at a
later date. |
|
|
Vendor
Fair and Luncheon |
Sonya Evans then
opened the afternoon portion of the session with recognition of
the vendors who provided their support for this meeting.
|
 |
After attendees
visited and obtained information at the vendor booths, lunch was
served (sponsored by Abbott Diagnostics and Cardinal Health).
All agreed that lunch was plentiful and tasty!
Both morning and afternoon breaks were provided by Bayer
Diagnostics---certainly, this group was fed well throughout the
day.
The tote bags bearing the SC POC Network logo (sponsored
by Roche Diagnostics and Beckman Coulter) given to all who
attended were a big hit with everyone!
Invitations, posters for the meeting and all work for the
website were provided by Steve Valorz and MAS.

“Preparing
POCT for a CAP Accreditation Inspection” |
Danette Pravidica, CAP
speaker, presented a presentation entitled “Preparing POCT for
a CAP Accreditation Inspection.”
Her information included details about areas inspector
will examine during the POC inspection, how to best prepare your
POCT for inspection and new and changing requirements for POCT.
She also answered the mind-numbing question of analytical
measurement range versus reportable range versus calibration
versus calibration verification.
The audience was “quizzed” at the end of the
presentation regarding hypothetical POC situations----and passed
with flying colors!
Danette was followed
by Karen Lackinger from CAP.
Karen discussed in-depth information about CAP new
developments and services.
This included Accreditation Program highlights, web-based
solutions, new products and the CAP News document.
A detailed review of how to sign up for “e-Lab
Solutions” (web-based services) was also presented.
Resources for answers to CAP questions were also
provided. |
