The
Current Status of Influenza Testing
Norman Moore, PhD,
Director, Scientific Affairs, Infectious
Diseases, Alere | Bio
This year’s flu season
is now more intense than any since the 2009 swine
flu pandemic and still getting worse, federal health
officials said on Friday. Nationally, the number of
people falling ill with flu is increasing. More
worrying, the hospitalization rate — a predictor of
the death rate — has just jumped. It is now on track
to equal or surpass that of the 2014-2015 flu
season. In that year, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention estimates, 34 million
Americans got the flu, 710,000 were hospitalized and
about 56,000 died.
The variety of strains makes predicting the severity
of the season or the efficacy of the vaccine
difficult. Early diagnosis can help differentiate
influenza from pneumonia so appropriate therapy can
be given. The type of sample along when it is
collected can have a significant impact on
diagnostic performance. Following this talk, you'll:
Understand why this season was so bad; Understand
the medical impact of influenza; Understand the
connection between influenza and pneumonia;
Understand how best to utilize diagnostic options
including patient sample acquisition. |

Scientific Affairs, Alere | Bio
You will learn to
recognize the importance of body language in
communication, practice developing a comfortable
handshake (not the wet noodle kind), identify and
demonstrate good posture and have the opportunity to
critique body language and assess its meaning.
This will be an interactive, fun (group
participation) presentation. An important part of
communication is recognizing body language which
helps us communicate better with healthcare workers
and patients. |

Norman Moore received his Bachelors Degree in
biology and philosophy from Dartmouth College and
his PhD in microbiology from the University of New
Hampshire. While at Digene Diagnostics, he worked on
an assay for human papillomavirus, the etiological
agent for cervical cancer. At GeneTrak Systems, he
commercialized a test for Salmonella in the

both of which are now recommended by the Infectious
Disease Society of America for use in severe
pneumonia cases. He became the R&D director where he
developed tests for diseases such as influenza and
RSV. Binax was acquired by Alere, formerly Inverness
Medical where he then took on the role of scientific
affairs for infectious diseases. He has served on
