NORMAN MOORE, Ph.D.

Director, Scientific Affairs for Infectious Diseases, Alere

Dr. Moore received his Bachelors Degree in biology and philosophy from Dartmouth College and his PhD in microbiology from the University of New Hampshire.  While at Digene Diagnostics, he worked on an assay for human papillomavirus, the etiological agent for cervical cancer.  At GeneTrak Systems, he commercialized a test for Salmonella in the food industry.  He went to work for Binax where as a senior scientist, he developed the first ever rapid tests for Legionella and S. pneumoniae, both of which are now recommended by the Infectious Disease Society of America for use in severe pneumonia cases.

He became the R&D director where he developed tests for diseases such as influenza and RSV.  Binax was acquired by Alere, formerly Inverness Medical where he then took on the role of scientific affairs for infectious diseases.  He has served on multiple NIAID grant committees, the CDC guideline group for rapid influenza testing, and the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guideline committee for point-of-care infectious disease   He currently has six patents and numerous publications and presentations.

THOMAS I. KOSHY, Ph.D.

Senior Director, North American Scientific Affairs

Alere (formerly Biosite and Inverness Medical)

Dr. Koshy received his Bachelors Degree in Biology from Kalamazoo College and then earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology from Northwestern University in 1991.  After a pair of post-doctoral fellowships at Northwestern’s Medical School and Abbott Laboratories Pharmaceutical Division, Dr. Koshy joined the Abbott Laboratories Diagnostic Division as an R&D scientist.  His eleven year career at Abbott Diagnostics spanned R&D, Manufacturing, Technical Support, Quality and Scientific Affairs.  Dr. Koshy’s experience covers many areas including transplant, endocrine/thyroid, pregnancy/fertility, hepatitis/retrovirus and cardiac diagnostics.

In 2006 Dr. Koshy joined Biosite (since acquired by Inverness Medical and now rebranded as Alere) as a Scientific Affairs Director for the cardiovascular business.  In 2011 he was asked to lead the Scientific Affairs group for all of Alere, expanding his responsibilities to Infectious Disesase, Cancer and Women’s Health.  In his role as a scientific liaison between Alere and it’s scientist and health provider customers, Dr. Koshy has been an author of the CLSI Guidance document: POCT09: Selection Criteria for Point-of-Care Testing Devices and currently serves on the CAP POC Committee
