AACC Open Industry Consortium

PointofCare.net

During last year's AACC Annual Meeting in Chicago(1998), the POCT Industrial Liaison Committee met in an open session to explore problems that suppliers, LIS companies and users experience with POCT instruments and applications. Over sixty attendees representing all AACC POCT constituencies concluded that the lack of standards for connectivity and data management was by far their most significant problem.

At a similar open committee meeting at AACC/ASCP '99 in New Orleans, over 120 representatives of POC suppliers, users, and the LIS sector discussed a proposed "Open Industry Consortium" to develop open standards for POC connectivity.

The goal of the Open Industry Consortium is to propose and discuss an approach to the development of POCT connectivity standards, specifically, an industry consortium open to all interested parties.  The consortium would be modeled after the Andover Working Group - a highly successful, member-funded consortium on standard for hospital hardware/software interoperability.  The Andover Working Group is administered by Hewlett Packard and is open to any current supplier or user.

The Consortium discussed the objectives and activities of the Andover Working Group and will continue discussion on the use of this model.  Hewlett Packard will host the next meeting of the Consortium on October 20, 1999 at Palo Alto, CARegister for this meeting.  For more information, visit the web-site which has been set up for dissemination of information about this endeavor:  http://poc.labs.agilent.com/poc.    You may download the Point of Care Integration white paper which describes the background of the project and register for the mailing list.
