Implementing Glucose Control in 2009 and Beyond: Changes in Patterns and Perceptions

This presentation examined the literature as well as provide an overview of 2009 AACE & ADA Consensus Statement on Inpatient Glycemic Control. It also described barriers and best practices for implementing a safe and effective glycemic control program. Additionally, it reviewed a units’ case history of implementing glycemic control, along with individual patient case studies highlighting potential future benefits of POC blood glucose monitoring.


Speaker/Panelist: Charles C. Reed, MSN, RN, CNRN

 

Since 1998 Charles Reed has served as the Patient Care Coordinator for the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit for University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He currently manages a 25 bed Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit with a staff of 120 nurses and ancillary support.  Mr. Reed served on the hospital’s Nursing Clinical Quality Improvement Committee and was charged with evaluating nurse patient indicators and implementation of process improvement plans. He is Co-Chair of the Nursing Research Committee and is active in research. He was published in the 2007 Journal of the American College of Surgeons for his work on tight glycemic control and reduction in ICU mortality. He presented his work on improving glycemic control in the ICU at the Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress in 2008 and won the administrative award for “Improving Tight Glycemic control With The Adjunct Use Of A Data Management Software Program”. Additionally, he presented at the 2009 Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress on “Glycemic Variability the Underlying Factors” He has been the PI and Co-Investigator on several glycemic research studies. Mr. Reed is involved in Regional Nursing Educational meetings, serves as an Adjunct Nursing Faculty for the University of the Incarnate Word, and has received numerous leadership awards.
